Color: Dark brown or blackish

Plants to 1.5 dm tall, sessile or stalked, in which case the stalk 10-13 mm diameter, terete below, flattened above and transitional into the base of the blade; blade cuneate to rounded, somewhat irregularly lobed, to 6 cm long, 8 cm broad, rather softly leathery; structural filaments dull brown, notably monoliform, those of the medulla 50-70 µ diameter, those of the surface about 30 µ; reputed sporangia superficial, 200-350 µ diameter, 350-800 µ long. Thallus solitary, seldom clustered; mature blades kidney shaped to oval, loosely woven; margins smoothly rounded, lacerate, or ragged; blade base flat or lobed; zonation faint; stipe narrow, cylindrical, seldom branched; rhizoidal mass bulbous.
