Description
Size: 4-5 µm in diameter in the basal layer, 6-9 µm in diameter in the upper branches, some of which tapper to 1 µm in diameter at the tip; upper branches parallel or radially arranged in the gelatinous matrix. Heterocysts 8-12 µm in diameter or more, spherical, oval, or subglobose.

Plants forming a flattened crust or spherical to irregular, firm gelatinous masses a few millimeters to several centimeters in diameter, often folded and becoming hollow with age. Attached to rocks, wood, larger algae, or seagrass leaves in the intertidal zone along open-sea beaches where the salinity is consistently high and the water clear.
