Pampus argenteus   (Euphrasen,  1788) (Fish)
Organism information awaits expert curation
Class: Actinopterygii

Image copyrights: Mya Than Tun

Size: 20-60 cm.

Color: Is gray above grading to silvery white towards the belly, with small black dots all over the body. Fins are faintly yellow, vertical fins with dark edges.

Body is firm, very deep, oval, and compressed. Operculum absent, gill opening reduced to a vertical slit on the side of the body, gill membrane broadly united to isthmus. Height 1.3-1.5, 1.8-2.1 in length with caudal. Head 3.5-3.7, 4.8-5 in length with caudal. Eye with a feebly developed adipose eyelid, 2.9-3.8, 1.1-1.6 in very convex inter orbital space. The snout is about two thirds of eye in young ones, almost equal to eye in adults. Mouth small, oblique, slightly inferior in adult, more so in young ones. Maxillary reaching to below front border of pupil in young, to below front border of eye in adults. A narrow row of villi form teeth in the jaws. The rays of the last seven teeth of the dorsal are low, being slightly less than eye, the rays of the anterior three tenths of the fin from a long falcate lobe, the median rays of this part longest and about equal to distance between tip of snout and base of pectoral. In young the transition from the lobe to the posterior part of the fin is less abrupt and the upper border of the fin therefore somewhat less concave. Origin of anal behind that of dorsal, similar in shape to that fin, but the lobes generally longer. Pectorals very long and pointed, slightly less than distance between symphysis of lower jaw and anus. In young ones these fins are comparatively shorter. Caudal very deeply forked, the lobes long and pointed. Dorsal and anal fins preceded by a series of 5 to 10 blade-like spines with anterior and posterior points. Pelvic fins are absent. Caudal fin is deeply forked, the lower lobe longer than the upper. Dorsal spines (total): 0, Dorsal soft rays (total): 3743, Vertebrae: 34-37.

Remarks: Values in above description denote proportions.
