Description
Plants up to 5 cm tall, closely to loosely dichotomously branched at wide angles in small, crowded plants or at narrow angles in tall ones. Segments subterete below, strongly compressed above where with parallel sides or cuneate to distally bifurcate, 0.3-1.5 mm wide exclusive of the forks, 1-4 mm long. Distal ends of the segments below a node simple or variously forked.
The articulations nearly covered by the cortex of the segments along the lateral margins, usually with 3 medullary zones of successively shorter but relatively long cells topped by one of nearly isodiametric cells, substantially corticated with small cells in anticlinal series, but not calcified. The large calcified segments with medullary zones of (1-) 2-4 layers of long cells repeatedly alternating with one, seldom 2 layers of small ones. Conceptacles prominent, often numerous and crowded on the faces of the segments, 270-420 ยต diameter.
