Color: Red-purple, fading when dried

Thallus round somewhat lobed, 1-3 cm diameter, membranous-crustose; strongly adherent by numerous short rhizoids, the hypothallus of straight, radiating filaments. Cells oblong, appearing distromatic in transverse section the cell tiers of the perithallus arising obliquely, the lower cells 2-3 times as tall as broad, the upper ones half as tall as broad. Paraphyses subclavate, with longer cells below than above. Sporangia tetrapartite, not on special stalks, to about 80-100 µ long, 23-35 µ diameter.
