Organism information awaits expert curation
Class: Actinopterygii

Image copyrights: Mya Than Tun

Size: 20-25 cm.

Color: Whitish in alcohol specimens more or less brownish, upper surface of snout and inter orbital space black, an anterior broad black band descends from anterior four dorsal spines, touching hind margin of operculum, widening and including base of pectoral, continued along belly on spinous anal and including ventrals, a posterior band from (fifth), sixth and seventh dorsal spine obliquely running downwards and including posterior half of anal, ventrals black, other fins whitish.

Greatly compressed and elevated, sub rhomboid, height 1.2-1.4, head 2.75 to more than 3 in length. Snout rather short, conical, mouth opening small, horizontal. Rostro-dorsal outline strongly ascending in a somewhat curved line beginning with a concavity to opposite orbit where in adult a tumidity is present which in old age is corrugate or even spiny, form there to dorsal the outline is convex. Eye 3-3.4, its diameter about equal to convex inter orbital space. Preoperculum finely serrate. Scales moderate, rounded, getting smaller on head and towards median fins. Lateral line continuous, anteriorly concurrent with black, than obliquely descending and ending at base of caudal. Fourth dorsal spine growing with age, in adult exceeding elongate, filiform with rather broad floating membrane, rayed dorsal posteriorly, anal angulate, caudal more or less truncate, pectorals acute, about equal to head, ventrals of about similar length, with a rather strong spine equal to head without snout. Least height of caudal peduncle usually slightly surpassing length of eye. Distinguished from the very similar H. diphreutes by the longer snout, rounder shape and longer and more angular anal fin. Dorsal spines (total): 11-12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 22-27; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 17-19.

Fertilization internal (oviduct), oviparous. Form pairs during breeding.

A planktivorous species that generally remains within a few meters of the reef. Juveniles may sometimes pick on parasites on the epidermis of other fish.

Remarks: Values in above description denote proportions.
