Description
Size: 239 cm.

Max. weight reported: 200.0 kg.

Color: Back dark becoming grayish with yellowish tinge on sides and below and with several oblique transverse lines or rows of spots on sides of body. First dorsal grayish with yellowish tinge; second dorsal yellowish distally; dorsal finlets, anal and anal finlets yellow with dusky edges. Pectoral dark, yellowish distally.

Head 3.4-3.7 in standard length, 3.9-4.2 in total length. Depth of body 3.5-3.8 in standard length, 4.0-4.3 in total length. Maxillary reaching to below anterior 2/5 of eye diameter. Teeth in a single series in jaws, a patch of teeth on vomer and on palatines. Body completely scaled, those anteriorly on back and lateral line larger. First dorsal spine equal to snout and eye together. Insertion of second dorsal nearer to hind border of eye than to posterior end of caudal keel. Anal and soft dorsal as long as postorbital length of head and longer than first dorsal spine. Pectoral fin slightly longer than head, surpassing vertical through insertion of second dorsal. Ventral fin equal to snout and eye together.
Number of spines in the first dorsal fin: XIII-XIV; number of spines and rays in the second dorsal fin: 14+9; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: 14-15+8; gill raker count: 8-9+20-21.

Dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders, open water or substratum egg scatterers. Spawns throughout the year, but peaking once. Spawn throughout the tropical and equatorial waters of the major oceans. At higher latitudes, spawning is seasonal, with peaks in summer, may continue throughout the year at lower latitudes. Yellowfin tuna are multiple spawners, i.e. they spawn every few days over the spawning period. Eggs and sperm are released into the water for fertilization.
