Color: Bluish green above and silvery white on the flanks and on the underside. A distinct black spot is present on the posterior edge of the operculum. The dorsal, pectoral and caudal fins are dusky grey, sometimes becoming yellowish.

As name implies, it is torpedo-shaped and body is elongate, slightly compressed and fusiform. Body depth about 1/4th of standard length. Teeth are villiform and are arranged in a single row. A deep mid-body region divides the fish into a head region with a pointed snout on one side and a posterior region which tapers to a thin but strong caudal peduncle on the other side. The lateral line is strongly curved anteriorly becoming straight under the 6th or 7th dorsal spine. Fins are well developed and included two dorsal fins separated by a narrow space. The first dorsal fin has 8 spines and the second one has 1 spine and 18-20 soft rays. The last 7-9 dorsal rays are in the form of finlets. The anal fin has 2detached spines followed by 9 single spines and 16-17 soft rays. The last 8-10 rays are modified into finlets. Caudal fin is forked. Its lobes are equal. Scales are small and lateral line is strongly curved anteriorly and than becomes straight under 6th dorsal spine. It has nearly 52 well developed scutes. The height of the largest scute is about twice of the eye diameter.
