Epiphytic on Ulva

Color: Dark brown

Brown color results from the dominance of the xanthophyll fucoxanthin; this masks the other pigments, Chlorophyll a and c (no chlorophyll b), beta-carotene and other xanthophylls. Basal endophytic portion single layered, composed of branched filaments, cells of the filaments 16-20 µ long and 12-14 µ broad, richly provided with chromatophores, irregular in shape. Cells frequently forming rhizoids. Erect system consisting of assimilatory filaments clavate in shape, possessing cylindrical cells rich in chromatophores. Hairs sheathed, narrow at the base, broad above. Cells barrel shaped in the lower region of the hairs, considerably longer above, 20-40 µ and 8-10 µ broad. Intercalary meristem of the assimilators and hairs situated at the bases.

Plurilocular sporangia arising from the cells of the basal system, lying adjacent to the assimilators and the hairs, cylindrical to oblong, sessile or shortly pedicellate, 40-80 µ long and 15-23 µ broad.

Plants forming round, epiphytic patches on Enteromorpha or Ulva.
