Gracilaria fergusonii [Status Unaccepted]   J. Agardh,  1901 (Algae)
Organism information awaits expert curation
Class: Florideophyceae

Size: Upto 12 cm in height

Color: Red or purple

Thalli are erect. There are several fronds arising in tufts from a discoid holdfast. The main axis is unbranched in the proximal portion and more branched in the central and distal regions of the thallus. The repeated dichotomous branching in distal part gives the appearance of a flabellate to fastigiated crown. The apex is rounded, often sub capitate. Growth of the thallus is by an apical cell and the thallus is uniaxial in construction. The holdfast of alga in vertical section shows a number of uniseriate, occasionally branched filaments which are arranged in a parallel manner.

Cystocarps are dome-shaped, ostiolate and scattered over the mature parts of the thallus with multilayered pericarp and the cells are all clearly arranged in anticlinal radial rows with secondary pit connections. The gonimoblast filaments are with large, radially elongated thin-walled cells. The carpospores are produced sympodially, spherical to ovate and 13-23 µm x 9.6-12 µm in size. Some of the gonimoblast cells produce tubular cells called gonimonema. Krishnamurthy and Rajendran (1987) studied the nature of the “connecting filament” or “nutritive filament” in several South Indian species of Gracilaria and proposed this new term “gonimonema”. The tetrasporangia are ovate measuring 26-32 x 13-15 µm and scattered in the outer cortical region. The tetrasporangia are cruciately divided.
