Description
Size: Height of thallus 11 cm

Color: The alga is moderately calcareous and turns white on drying.

Thallus form and type: Articulated and calcified fronds

Substratum: Intertidal rocks and calcareous stones

Occurrence: Infra littoral fringe and sub littoral zone, tide pools

Season: November-April

The alga has a fan-shaped thallus attached to the substratum by a massive cylindrical holdfast about 3 cm in height. Attached to the holdfast are 1 to 2 lowermost segments which are compressed-cylindrical and measure 1.8 cm in height. To these segments are attached very characteristic flabellate segments, 1 cm in height and 2.5 cm in breadth. Many segments arise from these fan-shaped segments, all of which adhere laterally to produce a much larger fan-shaped structure. The upper segments are mostly reniform and flat while some are discoidal. The segments measure 0.5 cm to 1.5 cm in height and 1.5 cm to 2.5 cm in breadth. The margins of the segments are nearly smooth or slightly undulate and measure 2 mm in thickness. The node between segments is remarkably narrow, measuring about 0.5 cm.

There is a multiaxial core of medullary filaments, each measuring 66 µm to 132 µm in diameter. These filaments commonly branch trichotomously. The cortex is usually made of three layers of utricles. The submarginal utricles may bear up to five peripheral utricles which measure in surface view, 26.4 µm to 39.6 µm in diameter. In surface view, the peripheral utricles are hexagonal in appearance. All the medullary filaments unite together at the node. Aragonite crystals are upto 132 µm in length and 6.6 µm to 13.2 µm in thickness.
