Description
Color: Dull rose to dull brownish, rose.

Thallus filamentous, fuzzy, bush-like, dull, pale pink; branching alternate; branchlets numerous, delicate, deciduous, unbranched, banded; Thalli tufted, 5-15 cm in height; rhizoidal disc holdfasts 1 mm thick, main axes corticated, attenuating upwards, alternately or irregularly branched. Corticated by a transverse series of longitudinally elongate cells, eventually becoming subdivided and covered by rhizoidal filamentous downgrowths, with hair-like ramuli in the upper branches and branchlets, consisting of uniseriate axis bearing a ring of small cells at the nodes acute apices. The branchlet apex with a terminal spine cell. Red color results from the dominance of the pigments phycoerythrin and phycocyanin; this masks the other pigments, chlorophyll a (no chlorophyll b), beta-caratene and a number of unique xanthophylls. Holdfast small, disc-like.

Tetrasporangia at the node of the spine like ramuli, single, spherical, sessile, tetrahedrally divided, 50-70 ┬Ám diameter. Spermatangia in colorless patches at nodes. Cystocarp surrounded by branched involuce.
