Thalli membranaceous, thin and lubricous in younger specimen, later becoming thick and fleshy, 20-30 cm high, divided into many broad segments in an irregularly dichotomous manner with round axils, becoming gradually narrower above and tapering below to a cuneate or sometimes cordate base with a short slender stem. Segments 1-5 cm broad; margins entire or with branched proliferations.

Structurally, medulla loose, filamentous, cortex pseudoparaenchymatous, the inner of larger cells, the outer of smaller cells in anticlinal rows. Tetrasporangia zonately divided and scattered among cortical cells. Cystocarps hemispherical on the sides of marginal processes or the surface of the frond.
