Description
Trees, 8-15 m tall, 30-60 cm in diameter, with knee-bent aerial roots from the base of the stem, bark dark-brown, fissured. Leaves 1.5-4.5 x 0.8-1.5 cm, ovate or ovate-elliptic, coriaceous, rounded, emarginate at apex, cuneate at base. Flowers 10-12 mm long, red, shortly pedicelled, in terminal recemes. Fruits 9-12 mm long, compressed, corky, ellipsoid-oblong, longitudinally ribbed. Seed one.

Flowering and fruiting during May-July.

This species is easily distinguished from Lumnitzera racemosa by its red-flowering recemes.

(Wood is used for building canoes, rarely to make furniture and also used as fuel. The tannin extracted from this plant is used to tan fishing nets. Stem juice is used for external applications for herpes and itches.)
