Description
Size: Height 8 cm

Color: The calcification, being very mild, the thallus usually looks green. On drying the plant body turns yellow or rust colored.

Thallus form and type: Articulated and calcified fronds

Substratum: Intertidal rocks, calcareous stones

Occurrence: infra littoral fringe and sub littoral zone

Season: November-April

The alga is compact and grows erect. It is attached to the rocky substratum by means of distinct basal hold-fast which is usually compressed, conical. Segments adjacent to the hold fast are smaller than the others. The di-, trichotomous branches occur in a single plane. Occasionally four or more branches may originate from a single segment. While segments near the holdfast are cuneate, large majority of the segments are reniform or discoidal. They are plane with their margins slightly thickened. The margin is smooth, occasionally with notches. Segments measure 6 mm to 13 mm in height, 5 mm to 23 mm in breadth and 1 mm to 2 mm in thickness.

There is a central core of medullary filaments, each measuring 52.8 µm to 66 µm in diameter. These filaments branch dichotomously as well as trichotomously. The cortical filament is made up of 2 to 3 zones of utricles, usually the subterminal utricles, 66 µm to 145.2 µm in length, are larger than the others and may bear 2 to 3 peripheral utricles each. The peripheral utricles present a hexagonal appearance in surface view with a diameter 39.6 µm to 42.8 µm. In the nodal region the medullary filaments ususally exhibit "short fusion". Occasionally they may fuse for a length many times their diameter. In this case the fusion is called "extended fusion". Aragonite needles are of 3.3 µm to 6.6 µm in thickness and 13.2 µm to 132 µm in length. At the tip of a peripheral utricle a few globular structures are present.
