Description
Color: Dull or dark blue-green, sheath colorless to yellowish brown.

Thalli 1-2 mm in height, caespitose, velvety. Filaments 10-30(40) µm in diameter, slightly swollen at the bases. Sheath thick, 6-10 µm in thickness, lamellated with age. Trichomes 10-20 µm in diameter, apices attenuated into long hairs. Cells short, 2-3 µm in length. Heterocysts basal, 1-3 and intercalary.

Nitrogen-fixer. As a "tar spot" on pelagic Sargassum plants in the extremely nutrient-poor surface waters, it may be one of the reasons that Sargassum plants can obtain sufficient fixed nitrogen to permit them to become so abundant. It may have a beneficial effect on all of the larger benthic algae on which it is such a familiar and abundant epiphyte.
