Color: Back is blue green while the flanks are silvery; a series of black blotches along flanks which may disappear in large adults.

Body is fusiform, deep and compressed, its depth a little greater than head length which is 27 to 32% of standard length; with the belly having fairly sharply keeled scutes (pre-pelvic 16 to 18 and post-pelvic 13 to 16). A distinct median notch on the upper jaw. Top of skin covered with thick skin, no frontoparietal striae. Gill rakers numerous (120-275) on lower part of first arch. Pseudobranch rather attenuated, a groove present below border pf pseudobranch. No teeth in jaws. Caudal fin as long as head. Pectoral and pelvic fins with axillary scales. Dorsal fin as long as head. Dorsal fin with 15 to 16 branched rays. Anal fin with 16 to 20 branched rays, lying well behind dorsal fin base.
