Description
Size: Height 30-50 cm.

Color: Dark brown or brown

Plants radially organized. Basal portion composed of a thick prostrate rhizomatous holdfast. Upper portion composed of a short cylindrical main axis usually giving rise to five primary branches of unlimited growth. Primary branches richly provided with secondary short laterals. Short laterals bearing closely set and monopodially disposed ultimate branchlets. Branchlets modified into vesicles or richly branched receptacles. Axes of the plants richly covered over by short spiny processes. Leaves mainly confined to the lower portion of the main axis, as well as to the primary branches. Leaves large, 4-5 cm long and 3-5 cm broad, linear, margins entire, apices more or less round, cryptostomata distributed on either side of a prominent midrib. Vesicles elliptical or globular, occurring singly or in series of 2-5, separated by very short stem-like intervals, apical vesicle pointed at the tip. Cryptostomata scattered on the surface of the vesicles.

Receptacles sub-cylindrical or spindle-shaped, richly branched, possessing 2-6 or more oogonial or antheridial conceptacles.
