Description
Height: Thallus growing up to 40 cm.

Color: Red to wine red

Thallus form and type: Ramiform, cylindrical

Substratum: Intertidal stones, pebbles or shells

Occurrence: Lower mid littoral zone, tide pools

Season: November-April

Abundance: Moderate

Cylindrical with tapering branches and fine tips; plant bushy, branching freely from the point of attachment; branches usually alternate, sometimes young ones may appear like opposite; fronds cartilaginous and somewhat slippery; holdfast small, disc shaped.

Holmsella pachyderma, also a Rhodophycean alga lives as a parasite on Gracilaria verrucosa, absorbing the photosynthetic product “florideoside” from the host and storing as florideoside, mannitol and starch.
