Description
Plants erect, to 4 dm or more in height from a branching holdfast, virgate or with long branches and beset with shorter spur branches bearing the leaves. Leaves obpyramidal, reaching 1 cm long and broad on fertile branches or somewhat larger where the plants are sterile. Petiolar part of the leaf with 3 nearly smooth-margined ridges. Distal part of at least the upper leaves generally vesicular, the flattened top with a fairly broad, rounded-triangular to nearly circular membranous expansion having an entire or more commonly an aculeate-dentate margin. Cryptostomata numerous, scattered. Receptacles abundant, densely forking, axillary or between the leaves.
