Size: 150 mm.

Color: In preserved specimens brown, many scales with a lighter spot. A light bluish stripe connecting nostrils over snout. A large dark brown white edged ocellus between the 9th to 11th dorsal spines and lateral line. according to Bleeker this ocellus may disappear in large specimens. A brown spot at axil of pectoral and a less distinct one at base of last dorsal rays. Fins brown, darker at edge of spinous dorsal.

Height 1.6-1.8, 2.1-2.4 in length with caudal. Head 3.1-3.2, 3.9-4.1 in length with caudal. Length of head 1.3 in its height. profile of head convex. Eye 3-3.2, above equal to snout and 1-1.1 in slightly convex inter orbital space. Mouth slightly oblique. Maxillary reaching to below front border of eye. Teeth rounded, almost pointed at tip, in two rows ,the teeth of the inner row shorter and more slender. Preorbital rather deep, a shallow notch between it and the suborbital. Posterior part of preorbital and suborbital, scaly. Three or four transverse rows of scales on preopercle and another row on inferior limb. Posterior limb narrowly naked. Scales on upper part of head reaching to nostrils. First dorsal spine more than half length of second, following spines gently increasing in length to the seventh, which equals snout and eye together. Posterior spines decreasing again in length. 1 1/2 or 2 scales between lateral line and scaly sheath of dorsal last spine. Soft dorsal rounded, the median rays longest and equal to head without snout. First anal spine less than half length of second. Ventrals, with the first ray produced into a long filament, longer than head. Pectorals rounded, slightly shorter than head. Caudal emarginate.
