Size: Height of body 2.6-2.8 and head 2.5-2.8 in standard length. Eye 3-3.2. in head. Max. size: 48 cm TL. Dorsal spines (total): 5, Dorsal soft rays (total): 34 - 37, Anal spines: 4, Anal soft rays: 15 - 16, Vertebrae: 29.

Colour: Brown above and light below, Opercle and tip of dorsal darker. Dark brownish grey in color, silvery below, black blotch on distal part of anterior dorsal rays.

Body with conspicuous scales. Mouth large, inferior, maxillary reaching beyond posterior part of eye. Head length almost equal to height. Chin with a pair of well developed barbels. Tail forked. Snout is blunt, rounded, adipose. Hyoid barbels are present.
