Vegative chains. (DIC)

Description
Size: Apical axis 7-30 µm.

Color: Yellow brown.

Adjacent cells in chains connected by drawn up poles of the concave valves; basal part of setae short or missing. Colonies are curved and relatively long. Cells are rectangular in girdle view and the mantle is low. Foramina wide and elliptical. Intercalary and terminal setae are similar. They are long, thin and with a short basal part. Setae cross over at the colony margin, curve to the same direction, almost perpendicularly to the colony axis. One chloroplast is present. SEM reveals a concave, elliptical valve with sharp radiating costate pattern. The rimoportula is a centrally located tube-like structure. Setae are circular in cross-section, perforated by small poroids and bearing spiral rows of spines. Apertures a lanceolate slit, elliptical, or nearly circular. Resting spores are spiny, with broadly convex primary valve and almost flat secondary valve. Central process short, flattened with no protrusion or thickening on the inside.

Reproduction is general for group: both sexual and asexual.
