This species is found on coral islands, coral reefs, mangroves and in open ocean. It feeds on eels. It is usually found at a depth of 0-15 m. It has been recorded to dive to depths greater than 80 m. Beach rocks are thought to be an important habitat when on land.

Ventrals large, one-third to more than one half the width of the body; nostrils lateral; nasals separated by internasals; 19 longitudinal rows of imbricate scales at midbody; no azygous prefrontal shield; rostral undivided; ventrals 225–243; subcaudals: males 38–47, females 30–35. Upper lip dark brown.
