Kingdom:Chromista
Phylum:Ochrophyta
Class: Bacillariophyceae
Order:Leptocylindrales
Family:Leptocylindraceae

Description
Size: Diameter 5-16 µm.

Color: Yellow brown.

Cells are cylindrical in outline. They are united into chains by the valve face with a convex valve face joining the concave valve face of the adjacent valve. Valves bear no visible markings in light microscope but have short spines on the border between the valve face and the mantle. These can only be seen with SEM. Cells are weakly silicified with valve and girdle structure not visible in water mounts. Many small, rounded plate like chloroplasts are present. Resting spores have been observed and consist of two unequal valves within an auxospore. However, these resting stages are mainly observed in cultured material.

Reproduction is general for group: both sexual and asexual.
