Description
Color: Yellow brown.

It is a phytosynthetic species. Cells usually occur solitary or joined into very short chains. The cell outline is rectangular in girdle view and usually triangular in valve view with a conspicuous central process. A marginal ridge is present on the valves, appearing solid with slits or fringed (fimbrate). Chloroplasts are small and numerous. Resting spores are formed at one end of the parent cell. Valves are similar to those of the parent cell. The primary valve has a long valve mantle and a central spine. The secondary valve has no mantle.

Reproduction is general for group: both sexual and asexual.
