Ahnfeltia plicata   (Hudson) Fries,  1836 (Algae)
Organism information awaits expert curation
Class: Florideophyceae

Thallus form and type: Bushy, wiry and corymbose

Substratum: Intertidal rocks

Occurrence: Lower mid littoral zone, intertidal rock pools and often found buried in sand.

Season: December-April

Abundance: Moderate

Gametophytes horny, cylindrical, blackish fronds, narrow (1 mm diam.), irregularly subdichotomously branched, to 120 mm high, from a thin crustose base of up to 200 mm diam. Branches with rounded axils and blunt, often bleached tips and growing through shell fragments. Tetrasporophyte (Porphyrodiscus-phase) a thin violet crust, generally found in association with the gametophytes.
Red colour results from the dominance of the pigments phycoerythrin and phycocyanin; this masks the other pigments, chlorophyll a (no chlorophyll b), beta-caratene and a number of unique xanthophylls.

Vegetative reproduction is rare; asexual reproduction is effected by the formation of various kinds of spores. Sexual reproduction is unique in this group due to their passive, non flagellated sperm cells (spermatia).
