Thallus dense tufts of 4-7 cm diameter, filamentous, coarse, stiff, loose, entangled, forming pad-like cushions. Branching generally unilateral; attached by small sparse rhizoids, older branches often secondarily attached by short lateral branchelets. at lower intertidal or subtidal rock, attached by rhizoid-like branches with septate hapteroids, branches cylindrical, arcuate, irregularly ramified; ramuli unilateral, irregularly clustered, upper branches bend to form septate rhizoid-like structures. Branches 600-900 μm or upto 1 mm thick, chloroplasts numerous, discoid or polygonal, pyrenoid 1. Main filaments cylindrical, branchlets cylindrical with no or little taper, originating from upper end of parent cell; wall formation of branchlets basal to main filament.
