Colpomenia sinuosa   (Mertens ex Roth) Derbes & Solier,  1851 (Algae)
Organism information awaits expert curation
Class: Phaeophyceae

Colour: Thalli Dark brown

Thallus form and type: Globular or lobed vesicles

Substratum: Intertidal rocks, epiphytic on other large algae

Occurrence: Lower mid littoral zone and infra littoral fringe, wave exposed rocks

Season: November-April

Abundance: Dominent

Plants sessile, hollow, attached to the substratum by a basal disc, forming ball-shaped vesicles; older thalli becoming convoluted with corrugated surface. Thallus composed of a single-layered epidermis consisting of short rectangular cells with round corners. Thallus wall 0.3-0.4 mm thick; in section composed of thin walled large colorless cells towards the interior. Innermost layer cells 180 µ across. Intermediary cells smaller. Outermost 2 or 3 layers small cells, 3.7-7.5 µ across, with several chromatophores. Hairs superficial growths, ultimately becoming sunk in a depression of the thallus due to repeated division and limited growth of the surrounding cells. Vesicles about 3-12 cm in diameter. Tissue below the epidermis five to six layered. Cells of the upper two layers interrupted by cryptostomata on the upper side of the thallus; on the lower side rhizoids arise from the epidermal cells.

Plants bearing only plurilocular sporangia, the latter cylindrical, aggregated together, composing sori; uniseriate or biseriate. Paraphyses unicellular, intermingled with plurilocular sporangia, sometimes numerous, sometimes scare, or even wanting, obovate, 11 µ in diameter, 47 µ long.

Common Name (s)
• Oyster Thief (English)
Economic Importance and Threats
Importance:  Dangers
(As a result of photosynthetic activity, the globose thalli of the seaweed gets filled with gas and the larger thalli thus filled with gas lift young oysters and carry them to the sea causing thereby heavy loss.)

Habitat:  Reef Associated, Estuarine, Rocky, Sandy, Coastal
