Description
Size: Height 15-22 cm, breadth 0.5-1.75 cm

Color: Light brown; bright yellowish-olive and in older parts dark brown.

Thallus form and type: Frondose and ribbon type

Substratum: Intertidal rocks, gravel and coralline stones

Occurrence: Lower mid littoral zone

Season: November-April

Abundance: Moderate

Basal portion a small cuneate disc. Upper portion membranous, broad, ribbon-shaped, repeatedly but rather irregularly di or trichotomously branched. Numerous proliferating branches arising from the midrib of the thallus. Midrib in the main axis as well as in its branches very prominent , protruding out on both sides of the thallus. Small, bent, more or less well developed veins originating from the midrib all through the thallus. Margins of the branches sinuate and irregularly dentate, apices narrow. Thallus several layered in the midrib region, 3-4 in the veins and 2 layered in the wings. Cells of the midrib region thick-walled, quadrate in shape and radially arranged. Cells of the veins, thick-walled, quadrate. Wings composed of large, more or less thin walled cells.

Hairs in roundish groups occurring on both sides of the thallus, forming rows declining from the midrib to the periphery of the wings. Reproductive bodies forming recurved and arched groups, interspaced among the groups of hairs. Tetrasporangia in sori, around and between groups of hairs forming deflexed lines proceeding from midrib to margin, densely crowded, making the lines of hairs more marked and giving characteristic appearance to the lamina.
