Description
Size: 14 cm.

Color: Reddish brown with intermediate band between the first and second principal ones seem to be always present and there is generally a black blotch in the lateral line at base of caudal.

Height 2.8, 3.5 in length with caudal. Head 2.6, 3.2-3.3 in length with caudal. Eye 3. Snout two thirds of eye and equal to interorbital space. Mouth oblique, maxillary reaching to below posterior half of eye. Two indistinct vertical rows of scales on praeoperculum, which is finely serrated along its hind and lower border. Praeopercular ridge and praeorbital smooth, orbital rim somewhat rough, but without serrations. Height of praeorbital about one half of eye. First dorsal spine small, second one more than half length of third, which is the longest and strongest and equal to snout and eye. Spine of second dorsal somewhat shorter than fourth spine of first dorsal, about equal to postorbital part of head. Second anal spine equal to eye. Longest rays of soft dorsal about to head without snout, those of anal equal to head without snout, those of anal equal to postoebital part of head. Pectorals as long as or a little longer than ventrals, somewhat shorter than head without snout. Least height of caudal peduncle about 1.5 in its length, equal to postorbital part of head. Caudal incised, the lobes rounded.
Dorsal spines (total): 8-8, Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-9, Anal spines: 2, Anal soft rays: 8. Closely resemble A. doederleini, but distinguished in having longitudinal stripes in its sides, and a black ocellus equal to eye diameter on the base of its caudal fin.

Dioecious, external fertilization, bearers, external brooders, mouthbrooders, distinct pairing during courtship and spawning.
