Size: 25 cm.

Color: Greyish brown with darker blotches and a narrow network of pale lines, those on body tending to be more horizontlly arranged; fins pale, the caudal with 2 darker curved crossbars.

Body deep and compressed. Snout concave. First dorsal fin spine originating over posterior half of eye, armed with small to medium-sized posteriorly directed barbs, not received into a groove in back when depressed; second dorsal fin rays 32 or 33; anal fin rays 32 or 33; pectoral fin rays 14; pelvic fin rudiment movably articulated with pelvis (the mobile posterior portion short and somewhat conical), not projecting prominently rearward of ventral flap. In adult males, second dorsal ray elongate and caudal peduncle armed with a patch of forward curving bristles, this patch extending along midside of body to below anterior third of second dorsal fin, both absent in females and juveniles.
