Size: 16-17 cm.
Color: Independent of age, more or less brownish olivaceous, scales on head and often on body with a blue spot, on operculum a distinct blue or black, light-edged ocellus, fins blackish, spinous dorsal with a basal whitish (in live blue) stripe, soft dorsal, anal and caudal more or less white edged, caudal sometimes with interradial whitish dots.
Oblong, compressed, height 3 to 3 1/2 in length, 4 to 5 in length with caudal, equal to or somewhat less than head. Eye 3 1/2 to 4, its diameter 1/3 longer than snout. Rostro-frontal line convex. Jaws equal, maxillary reaching to behind eye. Praeoperculum with 4 to 5 oblique series of scales. Origin of dorsal above operculum, its spine slightly increasing in length to the last, which equal about half height of body and is much shorter than the rays of the acutely rounded soft dorsal. Third anal spine longest, about 2/5 length of head. Soft anal equalling about in height and form the soft dorsal. Caudal rounded, somewhat shorter than head. Pectorals rounded, their length about equal to that of postocular part of head. Ventrals inserted before origin of pectorals, their first elongate ray reaching anal.
Fertilization is external.
