Size: 30 cm.

Color: Adult, sooty black with greyish neck, the grey extending to sides of breast. Below, white; under tail-coverts black or black-and white. Iris dark brown. Bill slate, ridge of culmen and tip black. Legs and feet slate-blue, back of tarsus and outer toe black, middle of webs and joints dusky. Sexes alike.

Habits: Mainly feeds by diving after the prey underwater, follow fishing boats, sometimes in mixed flocks with other seabirds.

Breeding season: Breeds in the Maldives Island apparently between October and January, or later. Nest - a burrow excavated in sand beneath roots of scrub, within six meters of the shore; particularly numerous on small uninhabited islets. Eggs- white
