Description
Size: 87.5 cm SL.

Oblong, very compressed. Tail elongate and tapering. Dorsal profile before dorsal very convex, sloping steeply to head, the posterior profile of which is concave. Abdominal profile straight. Height 3¾ - 4½, head about 4-5 in total length, eye 4½ - 7½, longer than snout.
Maxillary reaching far behind eye, about 2½ in length of head without opercular flap. Origin of dorsal about equidistant between caudal and end of snout or eye. Ventrals immediately before anus, united at their base, about as long as ½ diameter of eye. Pectorals rounded, 1½ - 2 times in length of head (without opercular flap). Scales on head and body of equal size. Twenty to 22 transversal rows on praeoperculum. A double series of 37-45 spines along the abdomen. First branchial arch with 11 stout gill-rakers, spinous at the innerside, longer than branchial filaments, about ¾ of eye, and below these a series of ten blunt short protuberances at the innerside. More or less silvery, back dark, when young sometimes with more than 20 oblique double silvery transverse stripes. Pectorals and ventrals hyaline, dorsal, anal and caudal dark. Axil of pectorals black. Rarely dark spots or a series of 4 or 5 black patches in the caudal region.
